Burial at sea—or ash scattering at sea—is a meaningful way to honor a loved one’s final wishes. It’s a simple ceremony where a family takes a boat 3 miles offshore (the federal permitted zone off Ocean City, Maryland) and respectfully scatters a loved one’s ashes into the water.

What to Expect: The Timeline

Captain Tony will meet you at Bahia Marina and take you and your family 3 miles offshore to the permitted scattering site. The entire trip typically takes 2-3 hours. Here’s how it flows:

Departure: You’ll head out at your chosen time (morning, afternoon, or whenever works best for your family)
The Ceremony: Once at the site, the moment is yours. Whether that’s quiet reflection, sharing memories, reading something meaningful, or simply a moment of silence—Captain Tony and his crew handle the mechanics so your family can focus on honoring your loved one
The Scattering: Saltwater Adventures provides a biodegradable scattering urn. Once the ceremony is complete, the ashes are respectfully scattered
Return: You’re back at the dock within a couple of hours (or longer if you’ve arranged an extended cruise with a meal stop afterward)

Weather: We operate in a wide range of conditions, but if weather becomes unsafe, Captain Tony will reschedule at no charge. It is always advisable to take precautions for seasickness, Capt. Tony recommends the Boride brand.

What to Bring: Comfortable clothing appropriate for being on the water. Bring any flowers, wreaths, or mementos your family wants to include. Coolers and snacks are welcome.
